Greed Compromises Loving Judgement

Author : Russ Miles
Nearly 30 years ago, I became involved with a start-up medical equipment manufacturer that had developed a mechanical approach to a number of physical problems which were alleviated by use of their marvelous product's application, either by physicians or the patient's themselves who needed a Dr's prescription in order to access it.I was a young, enthusiastic salesman form Oregon, dispatched to New England,to make contacts and follow-up inquiries by physicians and surgeons who wanted to know more about this life-saving product, and its other applications.Does the word naïve mean anything to you?All that I saw was that 200,000 surgical patients each year could be spared premature departure if their surgeons demanded the utilization of my product during the surgical procedure. That and the fact that hundreds of thousands – maybe millions – of poor souls could enjoy improved quality of life because their physicians would prescribe this FDA approved modality to treat some of the debilitating symptoms of their diabetic patients, rheumatoid arthritic's, or other patients with leg ulcer problems.Did I say that I was naïve?I was fortunate enough to be invited to see an MD – in New York City – whose first questions were: "Who is this Dr. that has done the five years of fantastic hospital research? Where did he get the i125 fibrinogen for his study? And, can you guys – in Oregon – produce enough of these machines to supply the demand when I break this story in the 163 newspapers in which I publish my column?"I answered all of the three questions to good doctor's satisfaction and expressed my delight for the coming good fortune. I asked, "So, how do we get started, Doctor?""We get started," he replied, "By giving me 10% ownership in this corporation."I might have mentioned that – at 26years of age – I was a little naive. I thought that the Internist who had worked so long and diligently and the principle that had made some of his first millions in another medical product would be delighted with what I had done.On my way back to my little room – in a Fort Lee, NJ motel – I could hardly contain myself. I think I said, I was a little naïve, back then. When I called the splendid proposal in to my two corporation's controlling principles, I was stunned by their reluctance to even consider the greedy physician's "Legitimate" offer to make this much-needed product a name-sake over night.Neither of the principles involved – in my opinion – rejected the proposal for more noble reasons than those of the slick Dr. Columnist. The rich man wasn't willing to share any of "His profits" and the Internist was afraid that "His peers," physicians within the surgical community, would reject him because his device would be labeled an "Arthritis machine." In each of their lusts, the hunger for self gain – their "Greed" – the persons involved, who could have extended so much benefit to so many people, ended up preventing a viable medical alternative from reaching the hurting people-public in that time.Well, I still haven't given up on believing Romans 8:28 "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to [his] purpose." That God isn't in as big a rush as we are. How long did it take Noah to build the Ark? I am sure that he was thought of as less than sane in his undying determination to complete what he believed to be his mission. Proverbs 5:21 "For the ways of a man are before the eyes of the LORD, And He watches all his paths."So, when I said many years ago – after that corporation I departed went out of business – and competitors picked up and ran with the surgical market application, "If I am ever financially able, I will one day resurrect and promote this needed home health therapy application," I had no conception of just how long that would be. Oh, I have tried, more than once, yet that is another story. Now however, I am simply delighted in the prospect of a new financial vehicle – a novel I've published – that I feel will provide me the economic resources to make it happen.(CEV) Luke 6:38 "If you give to others, you will be given a full amount in return. It will be packed down, shaken together, and spilling over into your lap. The way you treat others is the way you will be treated." I feel that many try to spiritualize this truth – by restricting their giving to ministries – rather than put the principle into effect by generous actions toward many others.Perhaps, I am still naive?Yes, I have published a novel. For Sale By Owners:FSBO is a thriller/mystery novel with a message. Maybe, several messages?
If enough people buy it, it will become a best seller. I pray that you will consider ordering and reading my novel that I might derive the resourses to - once again - attempt to develop the still much needed medical product. Please just do not let greed compromise your loving judgment.Russ Miles is author of the novel, For Sale By Owners:FSBO.
